How to Grow Bottle Gourd at Home

Bottle Gourds are tasty, delicious, and are highly nutritious, and are enjoyed by people during the summer season in many dishes like lauki paratha, lauki kofta, lauki wadi, lauki soup, lauki pakora, lauki curry, dudhi bhaji and many other delicious delicacies. Bottle Gourds are grown during the summer and monsoon season, and are cultivated in warm climates all around the world. A single bottle gourd contains 95% water, th are very low in calories, but contains good amounts of protein, fat, carbs, fibre, zinc, riboflavin, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, copper, manganese, phosphorous, and B vitamins as well. They also protect the body against heart disease, cell damage, type 2 diabetes and many other conditions.

But don’t know how to grow bottle gourds at home? No need to worry about it now, as here in this blog, I will be presenting you the art of growing bottle gourds at home.


PART 1 Growing Bottle Gourds

1. Take a 6-7 inch wide and 5 inch pot, and put 50% Garden Soil, 30% Vermicompost and 20% Cocopeat, and make a small 0.5-1 inch pot and put 1-2 bottle gourd seeds in it.

2. Make sure that the pH level is between 5.8-6.4, and water the seeds regularly and frequently, and make sure that the soil is not dry.

3. After a few days small seedlings will start growing from it.

4. Transplant the seedlings to a much bigger pot if needed, and place the plants at least at a distance of 1-2 feets.

5. Fertilise the plants every month with nitrogen rich fertiliser like vermicompost, or a chemical fertiliser like NPK.



PART 2 Harvesting Bottle Gourds

1. When they start growing more than 2 branches, cut the new small branches to promote the growth of flowers in it.

2. After a few weeks, flowers of it will start growing. Pollinate the new female flowers with the male flowers at least once a week.

3. After a few days, the female flower will get matured, and the new fruit can be harvested.

4. Done! Now, you can harvest the home grown bottle gourd.
