How to Grow Chillies at Home

Chillies are delicious, and adds a whole new level of spiciness in the meals. They are enjoyed by people all around the year, and are used in delicious and mouthwatering Chaat (one of India’s most famous snack), Curries, Spicy Chilli Bean Soup, Mirchi Pakoda (Fried Stuffed Long Chillies with Gram Flour coating), Chilli Cheese Toast, and many more delicious and tasty delights. 15 gm of chilli has 6-7 calories with 88% water, and 0.3 gram Protein, 1.2 gram Carbs, 0.2 gram Fibre, and has many Vitamins and Minerals like Vitamin A, Vitamin K1, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Copper and Potassium. They also contain Capsanthin that gives its colour and may also fight cancer, and has Lutein which is found to improve eye health. One of their most unique properties is that they make the pain receptors present in your body insensitive by first binding with it, and gradually making you resistant to any form of pain.

PART 1 Preparing
1. Take a few chillies, and cut it in two halves. After cutting it, put the chillies in full sun for 2-3 days.

2. After a few days, the moisture present in the chillies will have evaporated, and now you can take out the seeds from it.

3. Take a 6-7 inch pot and make a mixture of 50% Garden Soil, 30% Vermicompost and 20% Cocopeat in it. After making the potting mix, flatten the top of the soil, and put a few chilli seeds on it. And cover it with a thin layer of the same soil.

4. Put the pot in a warm and sunny location, and water it regularly.




PART 2 Planting
1. After about 2 weeks, small chilli plants will start to grow. You can then transplant it in a bigger pot that is about 2-3 feet wide at a distance of 15-20 cm, after the seedlings are around 2-3 inches tall.

2. After transplanting, water the plants thoroughly and regularly. And give vermicompost every month or so.

3. It will around 5 to 10 days for fruits to appear after the flowers of the chilli plants get pollinated.

4. Done! You can harvest it when they are matured.
