How to Grow Brinjals at Home

Brinjals are tasty, delicious and highly nutritious, and are enjoyed by people during the spring, in many dishes like Kashmiri Dahi Baingan, Karela Aoor Baingan Ki Sabzi, Khatte Baingan, Dahi Baingan, Bharwa Baingan, Baingan-Capsicum Sabzi, Achari Baingan Bharta, Baingan Bharta, Aloo Baingan, Palak Baingan Sabzi, Bharli Vangi, and many other delicious delights. Brinjals, also known as Eggplants are grown during June to July for the autumn crop, in the month of April for summer crop, and in November for the spring crop. What's more, around 63% of the world brinjals are produced in China, followed by India accounting for 12,826,000 tons which is almost 2.5 times less than of China. A single cup of eggplant has just 20 calories, but contains 5 grams Carbs, 1 gram Protein, 3 grams Fibre, Folate, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Manganese and many other vitamins and minerals. They also contain many antioxidants which are substances that help the protect to fight against harmful substances and from the damage caused by it. Many studies have shown that antioxidants can also help prevent many types of diseases like heart disease and cancer. To be specific, an anthocyanin in brinjals known as nasunin is very beneficial for the body. Eggplants or Brinjals also maintains the blood sugar levels in the body, due to it's high fibre content that slows the rate of absorption of sugar and also slows digestion, which prevents the crashes and spikes, and maintains it at a proper rate.

And here in this blog, I will be presenting you the art of growing Eggplants at home. So take a bowl of popcorn, and get ready to dive into an ocean of information about brinjals.


PART 1 Growing Eggplants
1.Take a large 2-3 feet wide and 1.5-2 feet tall pot, and put 50% Garden Soil, 30% Vermicompost and 20% Cocopeat, and make a few small holes on the top of the soil and put 2-3 brinjal seeds in it.

2. Cover the holes with the same potting mix, and water the seeds regularly and frequently.

3. After a few days, small seedlings will start growning from it. Thin out the seedlings if the plants are too close to eachother as it might interfere with the growth of the healthy seedlings.
 

PART 2 Harvesting Eggplants
1. Fertilise the plants with nitrogen rich fertiliser like Vermicompost, or a chemical fertiliser like NPK.

2. Transplant the plants individually if needed.

3. After about 16-22 weeks, the brinjal plants will start growing flowers.

4. Done! You can harvest the fruits when their skin is firm and they are big enough.
