How to Grow Potatoes at Home

Potatoes are filling, tasty and easy to grow at home. They are enjoyed by people in many dishes all around the world like mashed potatoes, pan fried potatoes, potato au gratin, herb roasted potatoes, twice baked potato casserole, scalloped potatoes and ham, cheesy potato lasagna, fondant potatoes and many more delicious and mouthwatering snacks. Potatoes are full of many vitamins and minerals like Niacin, Folate, Potassium, Manganese, Phosphorous, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C all in just 161 calories. They are also rich in plant compounds like carotenoids, flavonoids and phenolic acids. These compounds when in the body, acts like antioxidants by neutralising the harmful molecules known as free radicals. When these free radicals accumulate at a particular place, it can increase the risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. And according to a test-tube study, the antioxidants present in potatoes may lower the growth of liver cancer cells.

PART 1 Planting the Potatoes
1. Take 4-5 small/medium sized potatoes, and then wrap them up in a wet cloth.

2. Leave it for 2-3 weeks, and change the cloth if necessary.

3. After 3 weeks, take out the potatoes from the cloth, and when the potatoes are sprouted that means that it is ready to be planted.

4. Take a 1-1.5 feet wide and 1 feet tall pot, and make a few holes on the bottom of it.

5. Put 50% Garden Soil, 30% Vermicompost and 20% Cocopeat, and then mix it well.

6. Now, make a few holes on the soil, and then put the potatoes in it. After doing this, cover them up using the same potting mix.



PART 2 Harvesting the Potatoes
1. After around a week, small green leaves will be growing out from the potatoes.

2. Water them regularly and frequently, and remove the dead leaves whenever seen.

3. After their stems are around a feet long, they are ready to harvest.

4. Done! Now you can harvest and enjoy the potatoes grown at home.
