How to Grow Peas at Home

Peas are delicious and tasty, and are enjoyed by many people in Indian curries like Methi Matar Malai (An Indian Delicacy made of Fenugreek, Peas and Cream), Aloo Matar (Potato and Peas), and in many other delicious snacks and foods made all around the world. They are highly nutritious, and contains great amounts of antioxidants and fibre. Half cup, or 170 gram peas has around 60 calories and 4 grams protein, which makes it a great snack and meal option for people wanting to lose weight, and to live a healthy and fit life. As they have low Glycemic Index or GI, they don’t shoot up the blood sugar levels quickly and directly after having any food with it, and also helps regulating the blood sugar levels. As they have a good amount of fibre in it, it also helps maintain a proper and clean bowel movement, and also feeds the good bacteria present in your intestine.
And, it can easily be grown at home without doing much. So let’s now begin the blog on How to Grow Peas at Home.

PART 1 Preparing
1. Choose a sunny and warm location and where it receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight.

2. Now, make the potting mix that has at least 50% Garden Soil, with 25% Vermicompost and 25% Cocopeat. And water the soil lightly before planting the seeds.

3. Make sure that the pH level of the soil is more than 6, but it should not be more than 6.5. If the pH is more than 6.5, then you can add an acidifier like aluminium sulphate or sulphur.

PART 2 Planting
1. After selecting the seed, check the temperature of the soil, and make sure it is more than 17C. For getting the most accurate temperature, you can buy a Soil Thermometer from the local garden centre.

2. Make 0.5-1 inch hole in the soil, and make sure there is at least 3-6 inch gap between each hole. And to provide support for the upcoming pea plant, you can put a few wooden sticks near the holes.

3. Put 1-2 seeds in each hole, and cover it using the same potting mix. And then water it regularly after planting the seeds.

PART 3 Harvesting
1. After about 1-2 weeks, the seeds will begin to sprout. Make sure to water it properly and regularly (4-5 times every week) when the seeds are at their initial stage.

2. Tie up the seedlings with the wooden sticks for giving them support, and cut pea shoots and immature leafs. And remove any pests and weeds near the plants.

3. After about 2-3 months after sprouting, the peas will start to develop, and then you can harvest it.

That’s it!
