How to Grow Onions at Home

Onions are delicious, tasty and are enjoyed by people between November to January, in many dishes like creamed pearl onions, caramelised onion & garlic pasta, green onion rolls, onion & cheddar biscuits, creamy onion dip, onion pie, and many more delicious delights. They are mostly grown in China, followed by United States and India. Onions are packed with Vitamin C, which boosts immune health, Vitamin B9 and Vitamin B6, which plays a key role in nerve function and red blood cell production, and many more antioxidants. They also contain many anti-inflammatory properties that may protect against blood clots, and can also help reduce high blood pressure. Onions also contain cancer-fighting compounds which has been shown to reduce tumor development.

What’s more, they can easily be grown at home even in a small pot. And here in this blog, I will be presenting a blog on How to Grow Onions at Home.

PART 1 Planting
1. Take a 1-2 feet wide and 1 feet tall pot, and put 50% Garden Soil, 30% Vermicompost and 20% Cocopeat.

2. After making the potting mix, put a few small onions in the soil at 2-3 inch gap, but don’t cover the top of the onions.

3. Water the onions regularly and frequently. And after a few days, leaves will start developing from it.

4. Fertilise it every month with nitrogen rich fertiliser like Vermicompost, or a chemical fertiliser like N-P-K.

PART 2 Harvesting
1. After some time, flowers will start developing on the top of the leaves. This indicates that the onions are fully matured and are ready to harvest. (A single onion can develop 2-5 onions from itself.)

2. Done! You can now harvest and enjoy them.

That’s it!
