What is IP Address - Short Description

Introduction

You may have seen this word many times on the internet.

You may also have seen a number like this “192.0.2.1”

This numerical label is also known as Internet Protocol Address (Also called IP Address)

IP Address is connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication with other devices/networks.

It is a unique address assigned by the Network administrator to each device connected to a network.

Functions

The two main functions of it are-

1. To provide identification of the computer host or it’s network interface.

2. And to provide the host’s location in the network.

IP Versions

There are two versions of IP commonly used today, IPv4 and IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 4 and Internet Protocol Version 6)

Types

There are mainly four types of IP Addresses-

1. Public IP Address is used to access and communicate with the internet.

2. Private IP Address is only used within a local network.

3. Static IP Address when assigned to a device, the address does not change.

4. Dynamic IP Address is an address assigned by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) temporarily.

Security Threats

Anyone who knows your IP Address can track your live location and can even use your IP Address to hack your device.

Use of VPN

VPN (Virtual Private Network) hides your IP Address assigned to you by your ISP and makes you safe from hackers getting into your IP Address.

And by using a VPN, all your data traffic gets routed through an encrypted virtual tunnel which hides you and your activities on the internet.
