Mangoes are delicious, sweet and highly nutritious. They are one of the most popular and sweetest fruits in the whole world, and are mostly eaten in summer season. One of the most popular shake made of Mangoes in India is known as Aamras (Dessert made of Mangoes), which is enjoyed along with a few Puris (Fried Refined Wheat Bread). Mangoes are packed with vitamins and minerals that we mostly miss in our meals. They are planted between March-April, and their fruits are harvested towards the end of the summer season after the trees are fully grown. This delicious and sweet fruit can take upto 4-5 Months to ripen depending on their variety, climate, and conditions where its grown. They need full sun to grow, but it does better if you place the tree in green shade for a few years until they get established. But don’t know how to grow mangoes at home?

No need to worry about it now. Here in this blog, I will be discussing about How to Grow Mangoes easily at Home.

PART 1 Preparing for Planting
1. Check if the environment where you will be planting is suitable for growing or not. Although Mangoes don’t need much maintenance, they should be grown in a hot place where the temperature is not less than 27C.

2. Choose a place where the mango tree can get lots of heat and direct sunlight. Although the size of the tree varies on their variety, but they get quite large. So it is better to grow it in an area where it does not get shaded by other bigger trees.

3. To choose the best variety of Mango, you should visit your local nursery to get more information about it. There are 2 main ways by which you can grow and harvest mangoes at home. First is to grow it by seed, or by planting a grafted sapling from nursery. Growing Mango tree from seed at home can take up a lot of area, or they may just be small, and there are very high chances that it will not produce any fruit. But, planting a grafted sapling of mango is a much better option, as the chances of fruiting in it is guaranteed, and it can produce a lot of fruits without gaining much height.

4. Mangoes should be grown in sandy, loose and well-draining rich soil. It grows best in acidic soil where the pH level between 4.5-7. And you should avoid using any chemical fertilisers as it contains salts, which can hinder the growth of the tree.

PART 2 Growing Tree from Seed
1. Select an organic, large and ripened mango, from which you will be taking out the seed. Visit your local nursery, or farmer’s market for the selection of seed/fruit.

2. Take out the flesh of the fruit, and then first wash the seed with water. To remove the fruit fibres from it, clean the seed using a steel wool pad or scrub brush. But be careful not to remove the outer layer of the seed.

3. Leave the seed overnight in a cool place, and away from sunlight. Then, open the seed using a sharp knife, by cutting it from the corner, but don’t cut it too deeply as it can damage the enclosed seed. Now open the seed, and then remove the seed inside it. The enclosed seed may look like a large lima bean.

4. Put the seed 1 inch deep in the soil, and then wait for 2-3 weeks until it germinates. Until the seed sprouts, keep the pot where the seed is planted in a warm but shaded area.

5. After the seed has sprouted, shift the seed in a bigger pot, or you can directly plant it in the ground.

PART 3 Planting Mango Tree
1. Choose a sunny spot, and dig a hole around double the size of the seed in the soil. The soil should contain at least 30% - 40% Compost for good results.

2. Take the sprouted seed and then put it in the hole. Cover it using the same potting mix, but don’t apply much pressure while covering it as it can tighten the soil, making it hard for the mango tree to grow.

3. Fertilise the mango plant every month using nitrogen rich fertiliser like Vermicompost.

4. In the beginning, you should water the tree thoroughly, but when its big enough, you can water it around 2-3 times a week.

5. Take out weeds growing near it, as they can sometimes be very dangerous for the tree, and can hinder the growth of the it.

6. Cut the branches time-to-time to minimise the size of the tree, and to maximise the number of fruits producing on it.

7. Done! You can havest the Mangoes when its fully ripened.

That’s it!
